Before a playable concept becomes a build, a creative lead can test a narrow question: can a new viewer work out the intended first move?
The team who wrote the brief already knows the answer. That familiarity can conceal an ambiguity in the scene. An opening frame review gives you a way to inspect it.
Show the frame before explaining the mechanic
Use a storyboard frame, a rough layout or a lightweight interaction prototype. Show it to someone who has not been involved in the concept and ask what they would do.
Record their answer before offering the intended action. If the format is interactive, watch the first attempt. You are looking for the action they infer from what is on screen.
Turn a mismatch into a specific edit
Consider an illustrative sorting concept: the intended action is to drag a piece into a tray, but the viewer expects to tap the tray. This does not prove the concept is weak. It tells you the screen supports a different interpretation.
You can now revisit the motion hint, the visual emphasis on the draggable object, or the instruction. Change one relevant cue and repeat the review. Keep a record of what changed so the discussion stays attached to an observable choice.
Keep the conclusion small enough to trust
Feedback from a colleague or a small review group is qualitative. It is useful for finding confusion; it is not a representative estimate of how a target audience will behave at scale. If audience familiarity matters, include people who resemble the intended viewers and record that context.
Passing this check does not establish engagement, retention, cost per install or commercial viability. Those questions require different evidence. A static frame also cannot show whether the interaction feels satisfying once it moves.
What belongs in the next brief
Record the opening frame, intended action, observed misunderstanding and revised cue. The production team then receives a design decision with a reason behind it, rather than a request to “make it more intuitive”.
